Oceanographic Museum of Vietnam
Located 5 kilometers from Nha Trang City center, at the foot of the outcrop where Bao Dai Village is constructed, Oceanographic Museum of Vietnam is housed in a grand French-colonial building. This is a must destination for those people who love the sea and explore sea creatures’ lives which is very diverse and abundant in the immense and mysterious ocean.
The museum is considered to be the largest storage and collection of marine specimens to research in Southeast Asia, with more than 20,000 specimens of 4,000 marine species and fauna of freshwater lakes (including East sea, Gulf of Thailand and Cambodia Lake), including the rare marine mammals which are threatened to be in extinction such as sea cows.
Oceanographic Museum of Vietnam
The collection of this museum spreads out over two floors. The ground floor is home to fish tanks of varying sizes that house all manner of marine life. The upstair floor is for exhibiting specimens, local boats and fishing artifacts, plus an 18 meter long whale skeleton.
In addition to the museum aquariums, there are also many of the theme rooms in the National Oceanographic Museum of Vietnam which focus on marine science featuring the history of its research equipment and technology such as: “From Light to Life” (features algae and phytoplankton), “Life in a Drop of Water” (microscopic aquatic organisms), or rooms illustrating coastal natural disasters, sacred legends, traditions and culture of Vietnam fishing.
Hon Mun Island
Situated in the southern part of Nha Trang Bay in Khanh Hoa province, Hon Mun Island is a prime diving and snorkeling site and is a protected area. Bo Nagar Cham Towers
Po Nagar Cham Towers are a complex of temples built between 8th and 11th centuries by the Cham people. It was built to honor the goddess Po Nagar- literally translated as “The mother of the Country”.
Later, historians have come to identify Po Nagar with the Hindu goddesses Bhagavati, the wife of Shiva, and Durga, the buffalo-demon slayer. The Po Nagar Towers are now situated on the high ground of a mountain called Cu Lao on the bank of Cai River, a few kilometers from the city centers to the north.
Po Nagar Cham Towers
The Cham Towers are square red brick structure with protruding support frames and tapering roofs. It used to have ten buildings, each dedicated to a different deity, but now only four remain. Among them the Po Nagar Kalan is the tallest building, at 25 meters and is the most impressive as well.
Here, Po Nagar was worshipped and, according to historical stone inscriptions, animal sacrifices were made in her honor. In the center of the complex is the tower of Cri Cambhu, goodness of fertility. The other two temples are the shrines of the Hindu gods Shiva and Ganesh respectively.
